I Can’t Run That Fast…
That is a phrase I hear all the time! How about… I not really a REAL runner… I can only run a couple of miles. What about this…. I don’t want to hold anyone up so I just will run by myself.
Any of these sound familiar?? To me they do and in fact I have said ALL OF THEM at one point. You know what? The are all ridiculous! If you lace up(or even if you choose to go without shoes) and put one foot in front of the other regardless of whether it is a 6 minute mile or a 13 minute mile – you are a runner as long as you run!! People get hung up on running versus jogging, and how fast, how far, how many times a week, how many miles a week, and what kind of shoes you choose to wear or not wear and at the end of the day…. if you run you are a runner! And… if you are looking for a community to connect, encourage, get advice, give advise, run with someone, celebrate the joys of a run all by yourself, and even commiserate the pains we go through in running – this is what Ozark Running Club was formed for and yes… you can participate at any level you want!!
Truth is, I never got fully engulfed in the running lifestyle until I let my guard down and joined a group of local runners on a group run early one morning before the sun came up. You see, I was worried that I wasn’t fast enough to run with a group and that I would hold them up, or that they would run farther than I could go, or that I was really just pretending to be a runner. But when I finally agreed and joined them that morning – it was a life changer for me. Turns out… they really didn’t care how fast I was – we just ran and it was fun! I had always enjoyed the freedom that a solo run gave me to decompress and be alone with my thoughts. But when I joined the group – it gave me a support system I never knew existed and more importantly – it gave me some of my best friends and a wealth of memories that has changed my life for the better ever since.
So – Ozarks Running Club is really just the formalization of that group(In fact most of the same people on those morning runs now make up the board for ORC). Our hope is that we build a great running community in the Southwest Missouri area and help others realize the joy that running can bring and the group support that the running community adds.
We have our website to get information out to the general public and to foster the official membership to the ORC. In the website we have an upcoming events page to help get the word out about local running events so that the most people can take part in them. We have the Facebook Page that is intended for general information to the public and members of the ORC. Then we also have a Facebook Group that is for our ORC members and others that want to communication, and connect with other runners in a conversational manner.
We encourage EVERYONE to participate in as many of these avenues that fit your individual preference and don’t worry – we don’t care how fast, or how far you run – just connect!!
