Why Ozarks Running Club??

I started back running seriously about 18 months ago.  For the first 6 months I ran by myself.  I signed up for my first marathon about 3 months into starting back and was like a deer in the headlights.  I really had no experience in that type of running, I had not ran with a group since high school, and was winging it from there.  Then by chance, I had an acquaintance invite me to a group run.  I was really nervous to accept the invitation and did so by leaving myself an out by saying “I will try to make it but if I am not there – don’t wait on me”.  Once I got over the nervousness and showed up – what I found is that running with a group changed the whole dynamic of running.  It gave me a forum to air my concerns, it provided a whole new world of friendships, and ultimately fueled my passion for the sport.  That’s not to say that I don’t still love a solo run every now and then to clear my head, but having a group of runners to rely on to keep me accountable and push me in terms of training was huge.

Over the past year or so I have talked with LOTS of local runners that have expressed that initial interest in getting together with other runners.  All of them seem to be in the same place I was – nervous to accept but intrigued by the idea.  Additionally I have talked to a lot of non-runners that have expressed interest into getting involved with running but are not sure where to start or even worse – have said “I could never do that”.  Running is a sport that EVERYONE can participate in and is an easy sport to start out in.

So the idea of a local running club has been in the back of my mind for the last year.  We really don’t have a local resource and a central group to help drive the sport in our area.  Thus – Ozarks Running Club is now officially at lift-off!  I hope that the group ultimately helps those thinking about running, those already involved and becomes a resource for the sport in the Southwest Missouri area.

Please let me know of your thoughts,  ideas and needs that you feel that could be better in the sport of running in our area and we will see if we can meet those!  Thanks for stopping by and hope to see you out there running!

  1. I would love to see a local beginner group start. Something like a “You Can Run” group. Really beginner and working up from there uninjured. More for the “fun” and camaradrie of the group, but accomplish running.

    • Anne – that is actually on the plans for 2013 in the early Spring. We are looking at having some running clinics for new as well as experienced runners and also starting some “Kick Start” running groups. It really does make a difference being able to enjoy running with other folks. We definitely appreciate any ideas, input and suggestions that can help the running community grow!!
